If you follow me on Instagram you might know that I, big ol’ pink puffy heart, love Lilly Pulitzer. It’s not a new obsession; I even had my first daughter and I photographed in matching Lilly shift dresses back in 2009. It’s actually very out of my comfort zone to wear loud, bright clothing with prints, in fact, I can almost always be found in solids, maybe a stripe here or there. There’s just something about Lilly that makes bright and colorful feel comfortable. I look forward to their catalogs or look books each season and this year’s summer catalog was no disappointment. They are always the highest quality, the paper feels great between your finger, which made this year’s summer catalog perfect for upcycling!

Supplies:

16×12  (or any size you want) plain canvas
2014 Summer Lilly Pulitzer catalog (specifically the back page)
Paper trimmer or scissors
Ruler & Pencil
Paint
Painters Tape
Mod Podge
Paint brushes

The first thing you’ll have to do is carefully tear the back page off the catalog. The bottom half of the back page is a fabulous print, which can be trimmed down to 5×7.

Prep your canvas by finding the exact center. I wanted my print to look framed in gold so I marked off my 5×7 print and then added a 1 inch border all the way around. Using painter’s tape I taped off a centered 7×9 box and painted the inside gold. As you can see I didn’t care too much about how the inside of the square looked as it will be covered with the print.

Once the gold was dry and I peeled up the painter’s tape I measured out 2 inch stripes and taped the areas that I wanted to stay white. I then painted the rest of the canvas pink. As you can see below it is almost impossible not to get bleed when working with the canvas. But it’s not a big deal, you’ll just have to go back with white paint and touch everything up. I find that the best way to clean everything up is with that nice straight edge brush that I showed in the supplies photo. You can get right up to the edge rather easily.

Once you’ve got everything cleaned up and it’s completely dry you can attach your print with Mod Podge. I put 1 medium layer of Mod Podge on the back of the print and centered it on the gold square. After 30 minutes I applied a light coating of Mod Podge over the entire print and gold “frame” area. Let dry and repeat if you’d like. You are ready to hang it up!

I am so excited about my new artwork. It is going to fit into my Flamingo/Cabana Stripe/Beachy guest room perfectly! Now to just hang up everything else, upholster the cornice board, sew some pillows, and accessorize the room. Maybe it will be ready for a reveal by Thanksgiving!  :)

I love typography as art. Might have something to do with my font obsession but typography art just sings to my heart. But here’s my little secret, I can’t paint. I mean, I REALLY can’t paint. Even straight lines are hard for me. That’s why I have a Silhouette Cameo – so I never have to hand paint anything in my life, ever again. Luckily for you and me, we don’t even have to know how to design subway or typography art because someone has already done it for us and we can buy the files in the Silhouette Store for under $1!!

Last week I made this piece for my sister. I knew how much she loved this saying so when I saw the file in the Silhouette Store I decided to buy it.

I like that the artists who list their designs in the Silhouette Store kind of give you a color theme starting out point. By no means do you have to you ANY of these colors they’ve used as their thumbnail for the design, but you can if you want. As you can see, I sort of followed their lead. I used Raspberry, Hot Pink, and Coral outdoor vinyl to make this sign.

I started by raiding my husbands wood pile in the garage and found this 16×12 piece of plywood. It has a small hole and notch on the back but no big deal, no one’s going to see the back! I sanded down all the edges and gave the side I was going to use as the front a good once over with the sand paper, too.

Next I gave the plywood a good, thick coat of gold metallic paint. I am way too impatient to wait for 2 coats of paint to dry so I only put on one coat. While I was waiting for the paint to dry I opened up my file in Silhouette Studio and sized the cutting file to give me about a 1 inch boarder – or 15×11. As I explained in my vinyl layering post, I like to ungroup the file and color in each piece of the file approximately the same color I am going to cut them out in so I have an idea of what the final piece will look like. That also helps me be efficient in my cutting so I know which pieces I need to grab for each piece of vinyl.

Once I got everything cut out I was ready to apply the vinyl to the painted wood. Using clear contact paper instead of pricey transfer tape I just eye balled it, but you could make some small pencil marks as guides where to apply the vinyl.

To be able to hang your art on the wall you can add a small sawtooth hanging hook on the back or go the wall friendly command picture hanging strip way.

How easy was that? Custom typography or subway art for about $6 ($1 for the file and $5 worth of vinyl)!

Although, as the song goes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be the most sneeziest time of the year for our family. The weather’s been extra weird this fall, going from warm to freezing and then back to warm over and over again. That, combined with the fact I have a kindergartener and a pre-schooler means the germs are pretty much everywhere these days. Luckily we’ve only had a couple days of sniffles, coughs, and not feeling our best, but we all know those days can be long. To help the day go by faster I’ve got a great Sick Day Activity – Decorate your own Kleenex® Box!!

The first think you’ll want to do, once you’re sitting at a place you can print from, is download this coupon for $1 off any multi pack of Kleenex from Target. Then, while you are at Target getting your Kleenex stop by the Dollar Spot and/or the craft aisle and pick yourself up a bunch of fun stickers, ribbon, foam shapes, etc.

Dump all the fun stickers and embellishments on the table and let your kiddos get to work!

The best part about getting to decorate your own box of Kleenex is that there are FOUR canvases per box!!

We used some letter stickers to “write” each person’s name on their box but as you can see we all came up with very different boxes so it won’t be too hard to know whose is whose.

Of course I covered one side of mine in ribbon, you totally knew that was going to happen, right?

Letting your kids have fun decorating their own Kleenex boxes will help distract them for a while from the fact they aren’t feeling their best. It might even help brighten their day. Also, a decorate box of your favorite Kleenex would make an awfully sweet gift to a family member or special neighbor who might be dealing with Cold and Flu Season, too!

Maybe now my three year old won’t go running from me every time I come near her to wipe her nose. Maybe.

There is a reason craft stores start carrying holiday supplies long before each holiday actually arrives. That reason is because if you don’t start now, you’ll never finish. Well, maybe YOU will finish, but I will not! I was very thankful for the trim-a-tree supplies being out before Halloween so that I could complete my Christmas Tree fabric wreath. I am sure this won’t be my only wreath of the season but for now it’s my favorite!!

I am pretty sure my neighbors think it’s odd I left this hanging on my door today, but I just couldn’t take it down.

The color palette sets the tone for how I will be decorating this year.

It might have been in the mid 70’s here today but that’s ok, Merry Christmas Y’all!

It’s Tuesday!! Which can only mean it’s time for a brand new 20 Minute Tuesday tutorial! Today I want to share a Chic (cheap) & Easy Floral Arrangement.

The secret to making this floral arrangement easy is simply the use of the frog. What’s a frog you ask? There are 2 types of floral frogs, one that looks like a bunch of pins that you place in the bottom of a container that you “stick” the stems into and the criss-crossed metal kind I am using.

I was SO excited to find this package of frog lid inserts when I was walking through Hobby Lobby on Saturday, they hopped right into my cart! (see what I did there, wink wink, nudge nudge)
The lid insert is so easy to use, it’s fool-proof! Simply unscrew the band, pop off the lid and replace it with the frog, and tighten the band back on the jar. Now you are ready to arrange your flowers! Doesn’t this blue Heritage Mason Jar from Ball just scream, “Put some pretty flowers in me, please!”?

Start by filling up your jar 3/4 full with water. Then, trim your stems (I like to do that under running water at an angle) and strip any greenery that will be below the water level. Leaving leaves and other greenery inside the water will cause it to rot early.
I like to place my accent flowers (in this case carnations and alstromeria) at 12, 6, 3, & 9 o’clock. Then I place my focal flower (the sunflower) in the center of the frog. Lastly I use the fillers to fill out the empty spots.
In about 10 minutes you’ve taken an $8 grocery store bouquet and turned it into a lovely, chic floral arrangement that is perfect to brighten up your desk (as mine is doing), kitchen, or give as a gift!

I am looking forward to having this lovely arrangement brighten my work day everyday this week!

I have decorating attention deficit disorder, or DADD. I can’t seem to just focus on one room at a time. Which means that at the moment NOTHING in my house is decorated and nothing feels complete. I mean, we’ve only been here for 5 years this October, what’s the rush? However, I am starting to get in the decorating groove now that the little ones are back in school and we should be traveling less.
Today’s project was to put the new bedding I bought on the bed – simple enough.
We went from this
DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

To this

DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

It’s a pretty good start, I would say, and that was really all I had planned to do in the bedroom today. That is until I just couldn’t let the bedding packaging go wasted!!
The duvet cover and both shams each came in a matching fabric drawstring bag. I plan to reuse the sham bags as jewelry pouches when I travel but I just couldn’t throw away the duvet bag. But what should I do with that beautiful fabric? Well, as luck would have it, I picked up a lucite tray on my last trip to the Container Store, and I still hadn’t decided where to use it. So, I put two and two together and came up with this really fast DIY project.
DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

I used an Acrylic Tray from The Container Store
~Tape measure
~Rotary cutter
~Duck Brand peel and stick laminate
~Fabric duvet cover bag from Serena and Lily

DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

I measured the inside of my tray and cut 2 pieces of peel and stick laminate to size and cut 1 piece out of my fabric bag to a dimension 1/2″ smaller in each direction.

DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

Once you have your pieces cut to size peel off the backing of one sheet of the laminate and place sticky side up. Center your upcycled fabric, wrong side down, on the laminate. Peel the backing off the 2nd sheet of laminate and place, sticky side down, on top of the fabric. Make sure you line up the laminate edges and use your hands to smooth out the fabric. Then just insert your newly laminated upcycled fabric into your tray!

DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

I love that it’s a perfect match!!

DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

My next step is new drapes, lamp shades, art work for this room. Check back in another couple years and I might actually have found those things 😉 Oh, and a cute bedside notebook to put in the tray to write down all my kinda crafty ideas!
DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

Are you working on making over any rooms in your house? Are you a fast decorator or do you take time to “curate” your items?

You may or may not know but I am in the middle of a HUGE renovation to my office/craft room. This renovation is making me clean out cabinets and boxes I probably haven’t look at for years. On the down side, I hate facing my craft supplies hoarding demons but on the plus side I am loving some of those said supplies I have been finding.
Over the weekend I found a stash of wool felt that I bought many moons ago so yesterday I decided I should do something with it. So I made fall felt flowers.

Supplies for this project are fairly simple

  • Felt (I bought mine from Giant Dwarf, it’s super DUPER nice felt)
  • Sharp Scissors
  • A pattern
  • Hot Glue/Gun

To speed up this project and hopefully make more than 1 flower in your 20 minutes skip the tracing of your template and just stack up 2 or 3 pieces of felt and simply cut around your patter as you go. You could pin the template in place if you’d like.

I used my Silhouette CAMEO (I’ve got a deal coming for you on those in 2 weeks!!!) to cut out my templates but you can simply draw your own shapes onto thick cardstock and cut them out by hand. You’ll just need 2 different sizes of basically the same shape.

Here are the larger flower pieces that will go in the back.

And then the smaller pieces that will go in front. You will need 2 of each size to make these flowers. You don’t need a backing piece of felt for this flower, just lay down your back flower and add a drop of hot glue (or felt glue) to the center and then place the next flower on top, twisting it slightly so the petals aren’t all lined up. Repeat this process 2 more times until you have glued together all 4 pieces of felt. To finish off your flower you can hot glue some seed beads or fringe a round small piece of felt or paper as I have done. Attach your center as you did the flowers.

My hands are starting to hurt just looking at these pictures again, it was a lot of cutting!

I love these colors together, they remind me of a coastal fall.

You can cut out a couple leaves if you’d like, or leave them plain. I mixed it up a little.

I used my template to create a paper flower when I was done, don’t want to let anything go to waste, right?
When you are done making your Fall Felt Flowers you can add a pin back, an alligator clip, attach them to headbands, decorate a frame, attach them to an extra special gift – the sky’s the limit with these beauties! I’ve got something decor related planned for mine, you’ll just have to come back soon and see what I’ve picked!!

Several months ago I fell head over orange and blue heels in love with this fabric.
Not all that shocking that I fell in LOVE with it, I know, but after buying a couple yards all it did was sit in my fabric cabinet. Until last night around 10pm when I had the sudden urge to make myself a new wreath!

I wasn’t sure it was going to work, but I really wanted the orange and blue chevron pattern to stay true to their design. I decided to wrap the wreath from front to back with my fabric. It wasn’t easy and it took about a bajillion pins but I finally got it to work! After hanging the wreath up in my office and staring at it for a while I decided it needed some add-ons. The bow with the fabric covered button was cute but I still needed more. I thought about adding a chalkboard cut out decal to the wreath but didn’t want the black on the wreath and wasn’t in the mood to make my own white chalkboard paint. So after a little supply searching through my ever-unorganized craft stash I had a Gru style Lightbulb moment!!
DRY ERASE BOARD!

I found a small wood circle, cut out a piece of peel and stick dry erase board to match, hot glued a little ribbon ruffle onto the back and VIOLA – a customizable Game Day Wreath! Now I can change the saying on the wreath every week depending on who my Alma Mater is playing! Brilliant right?!?

These would be really fun for any team that you love and I am looking forward to changing my wreath’s message every week!

Today’s 20 Minute Tuesday is really more like 5 minute Friday (but unfortunately it’s still only Tuesday).

The supplies are pretty easy for this one. If you don’t have a craft cutter (I use a Silhouette Cameo) you can easily buy a decal off Etsy OR I’ll give you some tips below on how to fake it!

Supplies:

  •  Any size frame you want/have on hand. This frame from IKEA was just sitting in my dining room.
  • A piece of your favorite cardstock cut to fit in your frame. I am a little obsessed with this chunky aqua glitter!
  • A vinyl decal with transfer tape OR a print out of a monogram you’ve designed and a paint pen.

Take the backing off your frame

If you’ve got a mat in your frame, tape your cardstock to the back side of the mat. If not mat, just place your cardstock in as if it were a photo.

Put your frame all back together.

Use your transfer tape to center and align your monogram and then use a credit card or your finger to press down your decal working out any bubbles you might have. Peel your transfer tape away slowly.

BAM! New art!

If you want to “fake” your decal you’ll can print out an anchor in the size you want as well as print out your monogram (I’ve shared how to make your own monogram here) to size. Once you’ve printed out your 2 pieces, cut them out, placing your monogram on top of your anchor, and place them behind your frame glass (and secure it in place with tape). Use a white paint marker to trace your design directly on top of the glass!

Now my little entryway table is complete!

I love how customizable this project is and I am thinking these are going to be great holiday gifts this season!!
