If you follow me on Instagram you might know that I, big ol’ pink puffy heart, love Lilly Pulitzer. It’s not a new obsession; I even had my first daughter and I photographed in matching Lilly shift dresses back in 2009. It’s actually very out of my comfort zone to wear loud, bright clothing with prints, in fact, I can almost always be found in solids, maybe a stripe here or there. There’s just something about Lilly that makes bright and colorful feel comfortable. I look forward to their catalogs or look books each season and this year’s summer catalog was no disappointment. They are always the highest quality, the paper feels great between your finger, which made this year’s summer catalog perfect for upcycling!

Supplies:

16×12  (or any size you want) plain canvas
2014 Summer Lilly Pulitzer catalog (specifically the back page)
Paper trimmer or scissors
Ruler & Pencil
Paint
Painters Tape
Mod Podge
Paint brushes

The first thing you’ll have to do is carefully tear the back page off the catalog. The bottom half of the back page is a fabulous print, which can be trimmed down to 5×7.

Prep your canvas by finding the exact center. I wanted my print to look framed in gold so I marked off my 5×7 print and then added a 1 inch border all the way around. Using painter’s tape I taped off a centered 7×9 box and painted the inside gold. As you can see I didn’t care too much about how the inside of the square looked as it will be covered with the print.

Once the gold was dry and I peeled up the painter’s tape I measured out 2 inch stripes and taped the areas that I wanted to stay white. I then painted the rest of the canvas pink. As you can see below it is almost impossible not to get bleed when working with the canvas. But it’s not a big deal, you’ll just have to go back with white paint and touch everything up. I find that the best way to clean everything up is with that nice straight edge brush that I showed in the supplies photo. You can get right up to the edge rather easily.

Once you’ve got everything cleaned up and it’s completely dry you can attach your print with Mod Podge. I put 1 medium layer of Mod Podge on the back of the print and centered it on the gold square. After 30 minutes I applied a light coating of Mod Podge over the entire print and gold “frame” area. Let dry and repeat if you’d like. You are ready to hang it up!

I am so excited about my new artwork. It is going to fit into my Flamingo/Cabana Stripe/Beachy guest room perfectly! Now to just hang up everything else, upholster the cornice board, sew some pillows, and accessorize the room. Maybe it will be ready for a reveal by Thanksgiving!  :)

Today’s 20 Minute Tuesday is really more like 5 minute Friday (but unfortunately it’s still only Tuesday).

The supplies are pretty easy for this one. If you don’t have a craft cutter (I use a Silhouette Cameo) you can easily buy a decal off Etsy OR I’ll give you some tips below on how to fake it!

Supplies:

  •  Any size frame you want/have on hand. This frame from IKEA was just sitting in my dining room.
  • A piece of your favorite cardstock cut to fit in your frame. I am a little obsessed with this chunky aqua glitter!
  • A vinyl decal with transfer tape OR a print out of a monogram you’ve designed and a paint pen.

Take the backing off your frame

If you’ve got a mat in your frame, tape your cardstock to the back side of the mat. If not mat, just place your cardstock in as if it were a photo.

Put your frame all back together.

Use your transfer tape to center and align your monogram and then use a credit card or your finger to press down your decal working out any bubbles you might have. Peel your transfer tape away slowly.

BAM! New art!

If you want to “fake” your decal you’ll can print out an anchor in the size you want as well as print out your monogram (I’ve shared how to make your own monogram here) to size. Once you’ve printed out your 2 pieces, cut them out, placing your monogram on top of your anchor, and place them behind your frame glass (and secure it in place with tape). Use a white paint marker to trace your design directly on top of the glass!

Now my little entryway table is complete!

I love how customizable this project is and I am thinking these are going to be great holiday gifts this season!!

Bulletin Board Tutorial

Supplies:

  • 12×12 cork tile
  • shaped chipboard (purchased at Hobby Lobby)
  • sharpie/marker
  • exacto knife or scissors
  • contact cement
  • optional – ribbon for hanging
  • optional – twine or ribbon for edging

Simply trace your object onto your cork tile. Use an exacto knife or scissors to cut out the cork board. Follow the directions on the bottle of contact cement to glue your 2 shapes together. Badda Bing, Badda Boom – you’re done! A couple optional steps you can take are to attach ribbon to the back of your chipboard and to edge your cork in twine or skinny ribbon.

Now I have a place to pin up inspiration, business cards, little things I can’t seem to toss out but serve no purpose.

I used a little contact cement to help me outline my cork in twine, I thought it gave it a more finished look, but it’s not necessary.

These would make really fun gifts, especially for the tween and teen set, you could do smaller ones for your locker or dorm or sorority house room!

It probably comes as no surprise that I have a hard time throwing away anything that could one day be considered a craft supply. I have stickers that are probably 15 years old, that, in all honesty, will most likely never be used, but I can’t seem to throw them out. So when I cut down a piece of 12×12 scrapbook paper to use for a project I usually end up saving the rest of it, even if it’s now odd shaped.
But my paper keeping ways came in handy last weekend when my husband made me clean out a bookshelf so that we could start our office renovation. Behold – the scrap bust clipboard!

 Supplies:
  • A mini clipboard
  • coordinating scrapbook paper scraps
  • Mod Podge
  • foam paint brush
  • nail file
  • Xacto Knife & self-healing cutting mat
So this is what I started out with – some random scraps of scrapbook paper in odd shapes, and a newly found mini clipboard I discovered while cleaning out a bookshelf.

I measured the width and length of the clip board to make sure that I was cutting wide enough strips of paper as well as enough of those strips. Then I laid them out in a pleasing pattern. Because the paper I used was double-sided I got even more bang for my nickel!

Then I gathered my Mod Podge and foam brush. Using a light to medium layer of Mod Podge directly on the clip board I started applying my strips from the bottom, working my way up and adding glue as I went.

The top strip will be the trickiest but you can kind of eye-ball the notch you need to cut to allow space for the hardware. You can also measure the width of it for a more exact notch.

Let the glue dry for at least 30 minutes, longer if you can. As you can see, I didn’t bother trimming my strips to the correct length before gluing, we’ll take care of that in the next step.

Using an Xacto knife, trim the extra paper off while holding your board over a self-healing mat (or some spare, thick cardboard). After you trim off the extra paper use sand paper or a nail file and file down the edges all around your clip board, it will give your project that extra professional finishing touch.

Apply 1 or 2 more LIGHT coats of Mod Podge to the top of your paper, allowing it to completely dry in between coats (that’s the key to less bubbling). And then, after you clean up your craft station, you’re done!! You could add some matching ribbon if you’d like or some alphabet stickers to personalize the clip board if you’d like.

This mini clipboard is also an awesome, interchangeable 5×7 photo frame!

It is still baby season with a lot of my friends, 2010 really is the year of the baby around my social circles. So I wanted to come up with a new twist on the personalized picture frames I have been trying to send all my friends (along with a real baby gift, too). This is one of my favorites. It’s a twofer kinda of gift really. A pretty frame with rolled felt flowers {PLUS} it’s a chalkboard (and it’s pink)!! I love the fact that you can narrate what picture is in the frame or just keep it plain or with a name. I need to install  some picture ledges in my office so I can make some of these for myself as well!
I found the tutorial for the rolled felt flowers here. (her wintery wreath is drool worthy)
Materials used:

  • $1 picture frame from Michaels
  • Pink Chalkboard paint ($3.49 at Hobby Lobby)
  • 4 pieces of felt from any craft store (4/$1 at Hobby Lobby)
  • hot glue gun & glue
