Have you seen these cute orange striped brown bags available in the Halloween section at Target this season? I probably wouldn’t have grabbed them if I hadn’t seen Staci from Lizard and Ladybug post them on her Instagram account. If you are looking for economical yet fun treat bags for class treats THESE are where it’s at! To make it even better I’ve created a FREE bag topper that you can tape, staple, or glue right to the bag to make you look like you put in hours of overtime into making your treats this year!

Supplies:

Brown Bags
Free Halloween Brown Bag Topper
White cardstock
Printer
Scissors or paper trimmer
Stapler/tape/glue
Bone folder (optional but I love it)

Download the FREE file and print it out on white cardstock. Use scissors or a paper trimmer to cut apart the bag toppers. Fold in half and then staple, tape, or glue to your folded over brown bag!

The front is fun with the cutest spider ever from Miss Kate Cuttables.

While the back allows for your little one enough space to write their own name!

The brown paper bags are great for so many reasons: price, size (you can put an apple or a non-food treat in these bags easy), and cuteness!

I just love playing with all the specialty materials that I’ve been stock piling since I first purchased my Silhouette machine 3+ years ago. Today I decided to break out the printable magnet paper and play. I don’t know what took me so long to finally try the magnet paper but I am totally hooked! And I am pretty sure my kids are A-OKAY with that, too, after making them this awesome, fun on the go, magnetic Halloween storyboard!

Supplies:

Cookie sheet from the dollar store
Printable Magnet Paper – use the code BIRTHDAY to get 40% off until October 1, 2014
Printer
Silhouette Studio & cutting machine (CAMEO or Portrait)
Vinyl (optional, used for the haunted house)
MTF Sweet Halloween Dings font (free for personal use)

I absolutely fell in love with this font when I saw it on Under A Cherry Tree‘s Facebook feed. It takes an intermediate knowledge of Silhouette Studio to figure out how to release the compound paths of the dingbats and color in each piece. If you have interest in learning how to do that please let me know so I can create a step by step tutorial. Once I got the first one done though I was hooked and they got easier to make.

Once I had all of my characters and monsters colored in the way I wanted I arranged them on an 8.5″x11″ page with the registration marks turned on so that I could use the print and cut function. Then you just put the printable magnet paper in the printer just as if it was a sheet of cardstock. I didn’t have to make any adjustments. Once you’re finished printing your magnet paper let the ink dry for a minute and two and then secure it, magnet side down, to your cutting mat. You want to make sure it’s very secure to the mat so there is no shifting. I cut the printable magnet paper with my blade set to 5.

If you’d like more info on print and cut you can always refer back to this post on Print and Cut 101.

And just to add a little more fun to the storyboard I used some black chalkboard vinyl to cut out this haunted house (design from the Silhouette store) and stuck it onto the cookie sheet.

I had a lot of fun playing with the board before I gave it to my daughter to play with.

She made up a very cute story about trick or treating and monsters that drop from the sky – she went on for 10 minutes or so. Non. Stop.

Using the chalkboard vinyl just added another dimension to her creative play.

We had so much fun playing with this that I made another set for my other daughter so that there would be no (ok, well, less) fighting.

Happy middle of September already everyone! I honestly can’t believe the month is half over and I also saw something on Facebook this morning about 100 days til Christmas? How can that even be? Well since we have half way through September it’s a great time to start thinking about Halloween and Autumn crafts so I am here to show you how you can make your own Split Pumpkin Monogram. The best part of this tutorial and that you can apply it to any shape for any holiday or season or party or whatever you want! Also, I am sharing a great September promotion from Silhouette today that lasts through the end of the month!!

I am going to go through the designing of the decal step by step in Silhouette Studio. If you need any tips on applying the decals please read my Vinyl Layering 101 post.  You can click on any of the photos to enlarge the details.

Step 1) Pick your design – this one is called Pumpkin Silhouette and I purchased it in the online store for $0.99 – you don’t need to worry about size yet. (I changed the color of the shape to better stand out in this tutorial, you do not have to fill in a color.)

Step 2) Draw a rectangle the height of the wording you’d like to put in the pumpkin and a width that overlaps the edges. I picked about 1.75 inches tall. (Again, I am using the green for the tutorial visual)

3) Select both images (the pumpkin and the rectangle) by holding the shift key and clicking on each one and then under the modify menu click on “Subtract.”

4) Remove the rectangle from your pumpkin. You discard the shape or you can use it as your guide to option step 5.

5) (optional, skip 8 if you do not want the extended lines) Create a long, skinny (maybe .25 inch high) rectangle that overlaps the edges of the pumpkin. Copy and paste that rectangle so you now have 2 identical shapes. Place each of the skinny rectangles on the open ends of your pumpkin pieces. To make sure everything is centered select all 3 images (holding the shift key) and then select Object>Align>Align Center.

6) Now that everything is centered you can weld the shapes together so everything cuts as one. With all 3 shapes selected in the Modify menu click on “Weld.”

7) Once you’ve selected Weld you will now have only 2 pieces to your pumpkin (and SS will color them all the same so you can see that it is no just one image).

8) Now comes the hard part – selecting your font! I used Frosting for Breakfast to write out our family name. Play with the sizing until your personalization fits in the center of the pumpkin.
9) From here you’ll just want to cut your pieces out of vinyl and use transfer paper or contact paper to apply your decal to any surface you’d like!
 Before.
After!!
If you don’t have a Silhouette yet and are hoping to make beautiful and personalized holiday gifts for all your friends and family this year, Silhouette America has a wonderful deal on a Portrait right now! Just remember to use the code word KINDA at check out to redeem the special!

And if you do already have a CAMEO or Portrait they also have this great deal for Adhesive Cardstock going on, too.

Again, you’ll have to use the code word KINDA at check out to redeem either of these deals!

The temperatures are inching downward and I am itching to get in some front porch sitting. Summer time is entirely too hot to sit on our southern facing front porch and so, sad to say, it’s gone neglected as of late. Today I decided to change that neglect and give the porch my full attention. It started with a pillow I made last year and ended with 3 more to coordinate! The best part of all 4 pillows, besides the fact that you can make each one in around 20 minutes with only the most basic of sewing skills, is that they are all reversible!! Dual purpose really makes each pillow like 10 minutes, right??

Supplies:

Fabric
Scissors or rotary cutter
Ruler
Sewing machine, thread, and straight line sewing ablity (not fancy)
Pins
Poly-fil/Batting
Heat Transfer Vinyl (optional)

Directions:

  1. Place your front and back fabrics together on your cutting board if you’re using a rotary cutter, on a flat surface if you’re using scissors.
  2. Cut your fabrics to size. My large pillows in the back are 20″x20″ and the ones in the front vary (18″x9″ and 20″x10″). Cutting them both at the same time will ensure they are both the same size.
  3. Place your fabric right side facing and sew, using a 1/2″ seam around 3.5 sides, leaving enough room to turn the pillow case right side out and stuff with Poly-fil.
  4. Clip the corners and turn the pillow right side out.
  5. (optional) Iron on your Heat Transfer Vinyl decal (or use an embroidery machine to decorate both sides)
  6. Stuff with as much Poly-fil as you want, making sure you really get it into the corners. It might take some working to get it flat. I like to sit on it for a little while, it seems to help.
  7. Using straight pins close up the opening you used to stuff the pillow and sew it shut using a 1/4″ seam (I am lazy so I just top stitched with my machine, please feel free to use a fancy hand stitch to close it).
  8. Pop in on your porch!!

One side helps us show our Gator pride while the other side is ready for Halloween!

As you can see the pillows help tie in the I Love Florida Football Wreath I made last week.

And just when I thought 2 pillows were enough, they weren’t. I needed 2 more. I was out of the orange and while chevron fabric so I fished out this polka dot fabric from the bottom of my stash and ironed on our monogram.

Again, both of these pillows are reversible, including color coordinating monograms.

I even was able to quickly update my front porch bird cage with an easy ribbon change.

I am so excited about the start of my front porch makeover. I hope to add a few more versatile pieces in the coming weeks so check back soon for more updates and easy projects!

Some girls really love princesses and princess movies. I have one of those girls. Some girls think princesses are cool and all, but really love non-princess movies like Monsters University. I have one of those girls, too. It’s pretty easy to pick up a princess dress in the stores this time of year, year round actually. It’s not as easy to find a girl-approved costume for a non-princess movie, even at Halloween time. So when your girl picks up on how super cute the sorority girls from Python Nu Kappa are in Monsters University you’re only choice to get her the dress up costume is to make it yourself.

But don’t worry! It’s not expensive and it doesn’t take much time, either! Keep reading for all the details!

Supplies needed:
  • 1/2 yard of shag “fur” fabric* (this is enough for 2 girl costumes or 1 teen/adult)
  • 1 pair of knee high socks
  • scissors
  • sewing machine, matching thread (seam ripper if you’re like me)
  • 1 yard of elastic
  • Optional – blank t-shirt and Varsity Iron-On letters
*Shag fur fabric comes in many colors but it’s kinda pricey. It was $24 a yard at my fabric store but because it comes in 60″ length a half yard was more than enough

Instructions:

  1. Cut the foot off your knee socks.
  2. Cut your “fur” to size – use the length of your remaining sock and circumference of your wearer’s calf for the width.
  3. Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the “fur” to the top of the sock. Leave about a half inch of the sock un-sewn to the “fur” (this will allow for some stretch to get the sock off and on.
  4. Measure your wearer’s waist and cut a length of elastic 1 inch longer. Overlap your extra one inch and sew your elastic into a circle (as pictured). Cut a piece of “fur” the same width as the elastic, you can decide on the length (I picked 9″). Sew the “fur” onto the elastic, slightly stretching the elastic as you go.
  5. Optional – Iron the letters PNK to a t-shirt.

(you don’t have to use 2″ elastic as I have pictured here, it is just the only elastic I had on hand)

Monsters University comes out on Blu-Ray Combo pack on October 29th and you can pre-order your copy now. When it arrives my (oh my gosh when did she get so big) little girl will have her own dress up costume to watch the movie over and over and over again, just like her little sister does when we watch her princess movies!
You can find Monsters University on

If you were to look back through any of my past 3 years of Halloween posts you would never find a single carved pumpkin. I have always been way too intimidated to actually take a knife to a pumpkin to carve a Jack O’Lantern. My fear comes from years of utter pumpkin fails. When the chance came up to try out Pumpkin Masters carving kits I just knew it was now or never to get over my fears!

(be nice to KittyKin, she’s got inner beauty)

I know that you’ve seen Pumpkin Masters kits in the store, they sell them at everywhere from pumpkin patches, to your grocery store, to Targets and Walmarts nation-wide. They sell a kit for every pumpkin styling taste and they are all pretty cheap and way safer than using your kitchen knifes. There are spookier kits or kid friendly kits like we’ve chosen to do. My 5 year old was pretty excited when we found out that she actually got to help in what she thought would be an adult only activity. I can tell that carving a real pumpkin is going to quickly become a very treasured family tradition.

Oh, and don’t forget to pick up one of the strobe lights. They are awesome, battery powered, and will illicit endless giggles from your little ghouls!

We picked this cute kitty from the Pumpkin Masters Kids kit, taped it on the pumpkin, and my 5 year old got to use the included crayon to transfer the outline on to the pumpkin.

Daddy helped get things started and we all got to take turns sawing away with included “knife.”

The fun, plastic eyes are what sold my daughter on this design and I have to say, I totally agree with her!

It’s a little grainy but here is KittyKin (that’s what she’s been dubbed) all lit up at night.

If you are scared of carving a real pumpkin like I was, I would urge you to just give one of these Pumpkin Masters kits a try. They are so economical you really won’t regret it. You never know, you might just create a new cherished family tradition like we have!
And, if you are already a master at carving pumpkins you need to enter your orange masterpiece in the 2013 Pumpkin Masters Carving Contest. It’s easy to enter:
  • Share a pic of your carving via Instagram or Twitter with #PumpkinMasters2013, submit via the Facebook app or send via email to: social@pumpkinmasters.com to enter for the chance to win one of six prizes, including $5,000 for the Best Pumpkin.
  • Contest runs from October 1 – 31, 2013.
  • Contest details and official rules

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

I love coming up with multiple ways to use my free printable tags, it just makes free better. I like using them even more when I can use them for a quick and easy gift and all I  have to do is print and attach and send out the door.

With yesterday being the first day of October I thought it might be fun to send something small to my daughter’s teacher to celebrate one of the best months of the year. Luckily I had recently stocked up on yummy smelling anti-bacterial soaps at Bath and Body Works and one just happened to be orange (which is perfect for the free printable tag I posted a couple weeks ago). So I printed out the tags, cut a length of black and white twine, and attached the tag to the Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin soap! Quick and Easy.

You can download your free printable tags here. And don’t forget – they are for personal use only!

It’s Tuesday! One day closer to Friday, the first day of October, and time for a little 20 Minute crafting! Today’s craft, DIY Happy Halloween Candles, will really only take about 5 minutes, so it’s a double bonus kind of day.

The supplies are easy, the crafting is easy – the only hard part was getting out of IKEA without an empty wallet.

Instructions:

You can use any plain candles you have, I picked these up at IKEA on the cheap, but you can upcycle candles you already have or buy plain candles just about anywhere. The buttons were picked up at JoAnn’s and the E6000 mini tube was found at Walmart. Just remove the buttons from the backing (the hardest part of the project) and then glue the Jack o’Lantern pieces directly to the candle. The only tip is to not use too much glue so it doesn’t ooze out everywhere. For the ghost candle I raided my daughter’s art supplies for the googley eyes and used a bit of the E6000 to attach them to the candle.
And now you are done!

Oh, and if you haven’t tried the Starburst Candy Corn yet this season, you are missing out!

Including today there are 6 Tuesdays until Halloween. That gives us 6 chances to do something spooky, fun, and easy in around 20 minutes! Like these Easy Glittered Witch Hat decorations!
Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Easy supplies plus easy crafting equals tons of glittery Halloween spookiness!

Supplies:

  • Paper Mache Witch Hat (I bought mine from ConsumerCrafts.com)
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • Assorted glitter
  • Empty Cardboard box to contain the glitter mess
  • Pencil
Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Easy steps to Glittered Witch Hats:

Eyeball where you want your colors to change on the hat and use you pencil to mark those spots. Then apply Mod Podge, one area at a time. If you are going to try to do a large area at once use a good medium to thick coat, if you want to work in smaller areas you can use a thinner coat. You just don’t want the glue to dry before you are able to get to the glitter (although you can go back and add as needed).

Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Then go ahead and place your hat in the box and get to glittering. (You’ll notice that in this photo the brim is the same color as the bottom tier. However, in the final picture you’ll see that I decided I wanted the brim black. You can easily Mod Podge right over your glitter and change the color or add to bald spots, it’s very forgiving.)

Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Continue adding Mod Podge and glitter, in lighter and lighter shades, until you’ve reached the top. I chose 3 different purples for my hat because that’s what I had on hand, you can do as few or as many as you’d like.

Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Easy Glitter Witch Hat

I used the same technique to make the striped hat – I marked off my guidelines, Mod Podged one stripe at a time, added the glitter, and moved on to the next stripe! I used a chunkier glitter on the striped hat and a very fine glitter on the Ombre hat.

Easy Glitter Witch Hat

Black pumpkin witch is a little sassier than her orange sister with her hat all up straight.

This craft would be a lot of fun to do with your kids, maybe just outside though!
Happy Halloween!
