20 Minute Tuesday | Painted Mason Jars

May 7, 2013 By Stacy 7 Comments

After a weekend with no crafting, I had the sudden urge to paint some Mason jars Monday morning. When I started I had no purpose other than to play with my new Martha Stewart Glass Paint that I had picked up last week. Once I got into it I decided that the jars were the perfect little containers for Teacher Appreciation Week, too!

So basically you only need a couple things for this project –

  • a mason jar
  • glass paint (it air cures in 21 days)
  • paint brush (foam pouncers for the polka dots)
  • painters or washi tape

The first jar I painted I used the new Fine Glitter Martha Stewart Glass Paint. I used some washi tape to tape off where I wanted the paint to stop. This paint took 2 medium thick coats only waiting about 15 minutes in between coats. (this version is the only real 20 Minute Tuesday craft because you don’t have to wait long in between coats, however total craft time for all of these methods is less than 20 minutes, it’s the waiting that’s no fun!)

The second jar that I painted I used the regular Martha Stewart Craft Paint in high gloss (Beach Glass is the color, in case you love it as much as I do). Once again I taped off the jar using washi tape and gave the jar 2 coats of paint. However, the first coat was a light coat, then I waited almost 2 hours and went in with a pretty thick second coat.

For my third jar I decided to go a little more whimsy and pulled out my trusty foam pouncer to create some fun polka dots. I used the same paint as the 2nd jar, giving each dot 2 coats of paint, waiting about an hour or so in between coats. I went ahead and dotted up the collar, too, since the paint works on metals and woods as well!

I think they turned out pretty fun and I can think of SO many fun uses and gift ideas for the jars.

Seeing as how it’s Teacher Appreciation week though, these jars are going to some very hard working daycare teachers! I picked up these cute stamps, stickers, and mini stamp pad, each $1, at Walmart today, they are the perfect size for the jar.

I also designed these simple chalkboard-esque “Thank You” tags for a friend last week and I thought they were the perfect final touch. You can download the tags for FREE by clicking here.

Hope you get the 20 minutes to paint yourself some beautiful mason jars, to give or to keep!
