Stacy vs The {Stencil} | pt. 1

September 2, 2011 By Stacy 9 Comments

I have to admit that until last weekend I had never stenciled before. I do have memories of my mom stenciling a border in our living rooms and dining rooms – oh 80’s, how I don’t miss your style. However, I had never used one myself. But I was determined to turn a piece of scrap wood from the hubby’s (ever growing) scrap wood pile into a piece of art, so I asked the hubs if he would router the edges of the scrap I found so I could get started. That night I painted it with several coats of glossy white paint so I would be good to go the next day when it was nice and dry. Then, I picked out a pattern I had in my Silhouette Studio library, cut it to size on a sheet of vinyl, weeded what seems like 100’s of little pieces of vinyl out of the pattern, got out my brand new Martha Stewart paints and sponge roller thingy. And then – major craft fail – I couldn’t properly transfer my HUGE vinyl “stencil” to the board (which is 9×22) in any sort of straight manor. After 30 minutes I gave up. Got in the car, drove to Michaels, and picked up a Martha Stewart stencil pack using my 40% off coupon. MUCH better option when your scale is so large! So take 2 – I taped my stencil down to my board, used my little foam roller that attaches right to the bottle itself (squeal!!) and went to town. Maybe I went too far into town b/c when I lifted the stencil up, there was paint everywhere, oh and I didn’t wait for the paint to dry before laying down the stencil in the next spot, so… I am sure you can guess how well that went. I quickly took a wet paper towel to take up as much paint as I could and cleaned the stencil down. TAKE THREE – (rrrr) – Tried it again, this time dabbing the paint and holding the stencil down taut, waiting for the paint to dry before moving on to the next spot, and wiping the underside of the stencil in between sections. It took WAY longer than I had anticipated, but I think the results were worth it! I love the Martha Stewart Pearl finish paint, it just adds another dimension to my board – which will one day soon be a sign – so stay tuned!

Oh gosh, I understand your pain with the stencil! I tried cutting out contact paper w/ my machine to do a pattern on the top of a dresser. I ended up having to trace the design and paint in instead. Took forever! Will be up on my blog soon, so I’ll be sure to share it with you 🙂
