20 Min Tuesday | DIY Lucite Bedside Tray

August 28, 2013 By Stacy 2 Comments

I have decorating attention deficit disorder, or DADD. I can’t seem to just focus on one room at a time. Which means that at the moment NOTHING in my house is decorated and nothing feels complete. I mean, we’ve only been here for 5 years this October, what’s the rush? However, I am starting to get in the decorating groove now that the little ones are back in school and we should be traveling less.
Today’s project was to put the new bedding I bought on the bed – simple enough.
We went from this

It’s a pretty good start, I would say, and that was really all I had planned to do in the bedroom today. That is until I just couldn’t let the bedding packaging go wasted!!
The duvet cover and both shams each came in a matching fabric drawstring bag. I plan to reuse the sham bags as jewelry pouches when I travel but I just couldn’t throw away the duvet bag. But what should I do with that beautiful fabric? Well, as luck would have it, I picked up a lucite tray on my last trip to the Container Store, and I still hadn’t decided where to use it. So, I put two and two together and came up with this really fast DIY project.

I used an Acrylic Tray from The Container Store
~Tape measure
~Rotary cutter
~Duck Brand peel and stick laminate
~Fabric duvet cover bag from Serena and Lily

I measured the inside of my tray and cut 2 pieces of peel and stick laminate to size and cut 1 piece out of my fabric bag to a dimension 1/2″ smaller in each direction.

Once you have your pieces cut to size peel off the backing of one sheet of the laminate and place sticky side up. Center your upcycled fabric, wrong side down, on the laminate. Peel the backing off the 2nd sheet of laminate and place, sticky side down, on top of the fabric. Make sure you line up the laminate edges and use your hands to smooth out the fabric. Then just insert your newly laminated upcycled fabric into your tray!

I love that it’s a perfect match!!

My next step is new drapes, lamp shades, art work for this room. Check back in another couple years and I might actually have found those things 😉 Oh, and a cute bedside notebook to put in the tray to write down all my kinda crafty ideas!

Are you working on making over any rooms in your house? Are you a fast decorator or do you take time to “curate” your items?
