Under the Sea | Free Wall Art

June 21, 2013 By Stacy 10 Comments

Searching through the wood scrap piles my husband keeps in the garage (we are in the midst of building built in book cases) I came across three blank pieces of wood that were SCREAMING to be painted. So that’s what I did – using the free wood, paint I already had in my paint box, and some scrap vinyl, I made myself FREE Wall Art!!

The only supplies you’ll need are; a piece of plywood, a vinyl decal (or you could cut out any shape you want on paper to use as your negative stencil), and some paint. If you want to make stripes you’ll also need painters tape. And some sort of varnish is you want.

There is no set way to accomplish making your free art but here is how I made mine.
  •  I applied my vinyl decal to my wood
  • I measured out my stripes and then used painters tape to help keep me straight
  • I painted in between my painter’s tape, 2 coats, and then immediately peeled away the tape (careful to keep the decal in place)
  • Painted the other stripes by hand, using 2 coats
  • Peeled away the decal
  • Applied a coat of polyurethene to help bring some color to the negative, nekkid wood

I also made one without stripes. I painted the wood the aqua color, then laid down the stencil once it was very dry, gave it 2 coats of ivory paint then peeled away the decal.

I love using these command strips to hang wood art to the walls!

Go find yourself some scrap wood and start painting!!

I made the decals with my silhouette machine but you can just trace and cut out any shape on a piece of vinyl or contact paper to make your “stencil”
