Run for the Roses Derby Wreath

April 24, 2014 By Stacy 14 Comments

We are just a little over a week away from the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. That means just over a week away from Mint Juleps, the singing of My Old Kentucky Home, and most importantly, the most exciting 2 minutes in sports!! Don’t forget the Spring dresses, large hats, and trying to figure out how to bet on a Trifecta.  Whether you pick the long shot or the 5:1, your door will place Win with this festive Run for the Roses Derby Wreath.

My husband and I love the first Saturday in May. We’ve even hosted a Cinco de Derby party, when the first Saturday in May fell on the 5th, as well as a 3rd birthday party for our youngest daughter that was preppy horse themed last year. We are lucky enough to have friends in town that host a large (adults only!!) Derby Party every year that they aren’t moving houses. And since I cannot show up to a party empty handed I made them this wreath for this year’s party.

And because it is made of faux flowers it will last for years and years to come!

I think that I am going to have to re-order all the materials I used to make this so that I can have one for myself, too!

Beautiful wreath! We host an annual derby party as well and I would love to make this. What did you use to get the horseshoe shape?

Hi! Do you have a tutorial to make this wreath? I want to make one for my husband’s 30th Derby themed party in May.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Ashley, I don’t have a tutorial on this wreath. However, I bought the styrofoam form from The Craft Place and just hot glued fake roses to it! Hope that helps!

    Stacy,

Would you be willing to make two of these Run for the Roses Derby Wreaths? I am having a party and just don’t have the time to do it myself. I would like to purchase them from you if you are able to make them. How much would you charge? Please let me know. Thank you!

Where did you buy the roses? I’m assuming it took quite a few so just wondering if there is somewhere to get a good deal on them!

I believe I bought them at Hobby Lobby when they were half off (which is every other week). I ended up having to purchase more online since my store only have a limited supply. They came as a bundle or 4-5 heads per stem.

Did you spray paint the foam or cover it with material before gluing the roses on?

No, I just used ribbon on the sides of the foam to cover them up.
