Things I do Thursday | Creating a Vintage Paint Finish

July 25, 2013 By Stacy 4 Comments

I’ve decided to change “What The?!? Wednesday” to “Things I do Thursday.” Some of the posts might not be mind shattering, but they are just a collection of tips or “Things I do” that help me while I am crafting. So, that being said, on with the show!
Today I want to share a good tip if you’ve cute things to paint, things like this ULTRA adorable lasercut wood monogram that Ten23 Designs sent me.

I don’t know about you, but I love a good monogram, and this, my friends, is a GOOD monogram! Lauren sells them painted or nekkid, buying one nekkid gives you the opportunity to create a personalized finish to your personalized cut out. I tried to go back and find the source of where I first heard this tip but I could not relocate it. So thank you to whom ever gave me this tip, I love it!

Supplies:

  • Lasercut Wood Monogram (or any wood object you are wanting to paint)
  • Paint in 2 colors (and paint supplies like brushes)
  • Vaseline
  • Sand Paper

Using the color you want to show through your final paint color, paint random spots around the edges. You could also paint the entire wooden object in your under paint color, but ain’t nobody got time for that. Once it is dry, you want to rub vaseline over the edges you want to peek out from behind the top coat.

Then go ahead and give that baby 2 or 3 coats of top paint and let dry completely.

When the paint is dry take your sandpaper and gently sand over the vaseline patches you applied earlier. The vaseline makes it MUCH easier for the top coat of paint to come off while protecting the bottom color and creates a beautiful weathered or vintage paint finish.

Come back next week to see how I’ve decided to display my wonderfully weathered monogram!

**Disclaimer – I was given this monogram at no charge from Ten23 Designs in exchange for my honest thoughts on the product. Everything I have written here is 100% my opinion!

“Ain’t nobody got time for that”…. I laughed out loud!! I always hear about the Vaseline trick – but thanks for the visual. I’ll try this very soon. PS – I’m loving your blog 🙂
